HEMLOCK

Hemlock is the unsung hero of the coast.

It grows in abundance all over the coast and historically has largely gone unnoticed. It's very strong and tough that runs a very close second in structural strength to Douglas Fir .

For example, loggers don’t grab just any trees for bridge stringers . and if a spruce or fir is not present, loggers don't hesitate to build their bridges with hemlock which have to support "off highway" logging trucks loaded with a hundred plus thousand pounds of logs.

Lately Hemlock has been experiencing a rennaisance with the timberframing industry. It is a great light coloured wood with a very cool grain which can be accentuated by oils and other clear coatings. There is high quality tight grain western hemlock in abundance here on the coast and it is cheaper to build with than fir.

It is a very stable and workable wood , and accepts glues and stain better than all the others. which is probably why high grade hemlock has always been used for high quality mouldings, we're also seeing it used more and more for flooring and it has great nail holding qualitiies like fir.
Whether knotty or high grade long wide clears , Hemlock is a winner .
