in general, when we talk about timbers we have three categories.

SUPER TIMBERS
These consist of
just about anything that the human mind can dream up within the confines
of what mother nature can provide. Usually a craftsman like a Timberframer
or Boatbuilder search for these one of a kind pieces. The true ‘added
value’ virtuosos.
In other words, we can cut timbers up to 80 feet in length. And if need
be , even turn those timbers ‘round’ again, Some construction
has required round timbers with no heart center. Neat eh? or perhaps an
octagon for a one of a kind post or pillar.
We get extreme orders from t ime to time for huge high grade clear timbers.
For example we needed to find the perfect big old growth logs to pull several
CLEAR 12”x 48”x 30 feet long timbers from. Another one was several
8”x 30”x 26’ long, all perfectly clear. It takes quite
a bit of time to find the logs. You can imagine how big they had to be.
But talk about glory wood. Wow! We were fortunate to have most of these
logs in stock from my last A-Frame logging show.
At Select Timbers that’s what we like. We like to slow down and cut
the extreme and special orders. We have no time constraints when we cut
this stuff. We make sure that the clears are not lost in high speed production.
And it is of utmost importance to get it right for the customer.
TIMBERFRAME CONSTRUCTION
This stuff is great.
In Timberframe construction you get the real wood bug. Unlike stickhouse builders
who slap a house together in a couple of weeks, you have people who really
love wood putting their heart and soul into that timberframe joinery. Unlike
stickhouses where drywall can hide a multitude of shoddy workmanship, the
timberframers craft is there for all to observe for the life of the structure.
The timberframers reputation is right there for all to see in the exposed
joints that the drywall , if used at all , is there to enhance and showcase.
And at the end of the day you get a house or building that will stand for
hundreds of years and is worth two to twenty times the value of a stick house.
These are the people we at ‘Select Timbers’ enjoy working with. Craftsmen, people who love wood and want to show it off and make a celebration of wood’s strength and beauty.
At ‘select timbers’ we know every timberframe house order is different and we will make sure that we understand the special touches that the builder is trying to accomplish. We understand that reputations are at stake. So getting it right is key.
OTHER TIMBERS
We have a wide variety
of west coast species in our yard inventory. Its heavy to Western Red Cedar
but when we have to fulfill a special order then we know exactly where to
aquire the exact log for the job. This could mean a very long timber up to eighty feet for a bridge or a long house. Or perhaps several very large old growth timbers, ‘clear’. Or a very special request for spar wood where Queen Charlotte Sitka Spruce is required. Or boat lumber orders where ships knees, or a natural bent timber,or exacting edge grain in a timber are required…
Special or extreme stuff is challenging and of great interest to us. And although we haven’t done it all…… we certainly want to
